Georgia may not be the state that comes to mind when one thinks of water activities, but, in fact, the opportunities are varied and endless. With 1,500 miles of waterways that make up coastal Georgia including the barrier islands, the Intracoastal Waterway, fresh water rivers, swamps and salt water marshes Georgia is just the place for water recreation away from the typical tourist locations.
There are more than 30 beautiful Georgian lakes and over 80 relaxing streams and rivers that offer fishing, swimming and boating. Many of Georgia’s state parks have been created around the lakes and rivers. Crooked River State Park is located on Georgia’s coast near St. Mary’s, GA and offers kayaking, fishing and abundant marsh life. Vogel State Park in northern Georgia near Blairsville boasts streams, a waterfall, and Lake Trahlyta. Kayaking and canoeing are enjoyed by novice and expert enthusiasts throughout the state. Athen’s Broad River offers great opportunities for boaters, while Atlanta’s Chattahoochee and Annewakee Rivers provide a variety of challenges for paddlers.
While Georgia's coast is only 100 miles long between the Savannah and St. Mary’s Rivers, it is remarkable in beauty and opportunities. The barrier islands are an experience not to be missed. Jekyll, Sea Island, St. Simons, and Tybee Islands are developed and connected to the mainland by bridges and causeways. Their proximity to Savannah allows one the enjoyment of the wealth of history while still in driving distance of beach recreation. Island visitors enjoy surf fishing, kayaking, jet-skiing and parasailing. Add Georgia to your list of not-to-be-missed vacation spots!
