The world of video games has once again clawed its way into another market. People who enjoy water sports like windsurfing, wakeboarding, kite surfing and jet skiing can do their favorite activities even when the weather is less than desirable. Nintendo has released Wii Water Sports, a game that requires their balance board to dart through the virtual waves.

If you just feel like going for a relaxing surf, you can select from a substantial list of actual locations around the world from Hawaii to Australia. If you’re feeling more competitive, you can race a fellow player through an obstacle course. Are you a team player? There’s something for you too—one person drives the boat and sets up jumps and the other is on the wakeboard doing the athletic stuff. The longer you play, the more difficult the game and the tricks get. There are even trophies to win. It’s all quite realistic.

The graphics are pretty amazing, it’s true. And you get to “travel” to beautiful and exotic locations and surf some of the best waves in the world without leaving your living room. But in my humble opinion, no video game can ever replace the spray of the ocean or the wind against your face. This game is great for those of us who wait impatiently sit through winter waiting for the water to get warm again. But let’s hope those gamers remember to put down the controller and go outside!

So go ahead, go play while it’s still chilly. But come spring, head on down to the lake or ocean and have some fun. Remember to take pictures and submit them to WaterplayUSA’s Post & Play Contest! The clock is ticking down on your chance to win $1,000 and a choice of sponsored trip for yourself and three friends.
