Andy Thomasson, a fisherman from Virginia, hit the jackpot. Literally. When he caught an 883-pound marlin off the shores of North Carolina during a fishing tournament a few weeks back—the second biggest fish caught weighed almost 400-pounds less than his—he was the lucky winner of the $912,825 grand prize. Except for one tiny little detail. ...

This week is an exciting one for kayaking fans and enthusiasts. From Wednesday and continuing into Friday, the 2010 US Freestyle Kayaking National Championship will be taking place at Caras Park in Missoula, Montana. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill competition. Maybe it’s the fact that summer has arrived, or maybe it’s just that age-old fever for record-breaking is spreading around again, but more and more crazy feats have popped up in the news recently. While most of us were at work last Friday, Guy Cribb, a 13-time UK windsurfing champion and athlete extraordinaire, was well on his way to breaking the record for completing the most water sports in one day. For eleven hours, he completed over twenty different sports....

If you’re a water skier that has ever dreamed of leaving the boundaries of lakes and small bodies of water, you’re in luck. This is your chance to break the barrier between skiing and the open ocean with one of the newest up-and-coming sports to hit the water, wave skiing. The concept was developed by Mike Douglas and Cody Townsend, two professional water skiers who got stars in their eyes once they took a trip to Hawaii and witnessed one of the best surf spots in the world. After a period of trial-and-error finding the right set up, the best system was actually using the boots and bindings used for alpine skiing on top of specially designed...

I’ve come across dozens of articles in the past few days about anglers and environmentalists who have worked themselves into a tizzy about the discovery of an Asian carp outside of Lake Michigan. My first reaction was that they were probably overreacting. It’s just a little fish, after all…right? Once again, I stand corrected. Indulge me for a few moments...

Jessica Watson, a 16 year-old from Sydney, Australia, just set the world record for the youngest person to ever complete an unassisted circumnavigation in 362 days. Abby Sunderland, a 16 year-old from California recently had her hopes dashed of beating Watson’s record when, only four months into her journey, she triggered her distress beacons in the Indian Ocean after her boat was ravaged by a storm. And now Laura Dekker, a 14 year-old from the Netherlands, is desperate to get in on the circumnavigation trend…if she can get permission from Dutch courts. ...

Mark your calendars! This weekend, Team Wake Nation in Cincinnati is attempting to set the Guinness World Record for the longest distance traveled on a wakeboard in a single day. The five member team plans to travel 470 miles (the equivalent of going from Cincinnati all the way to Atlanta!) in the 24 hour time slot. It’s even officially sanctioned by Guinness World Records…so you know this will be legit. There will be plenty to do at...

Most of the kids these days are stuck inside on their cell phones and computers and other gadgets. Some of them seem to have forgotten how it is to experience the great outdoors. But recently, there has been talk of a new bill to promote children getting outside onto the water and rediscovering the environment. Just like the No Child Left Behind Act that was put in place in 2007 to establish student proficiency before advancing a grade, the No Child Left Inside Act will expand this into giving children education about their environment. ...

Do you want a quiet spot to fish this summer? Head to Kerr Reservoir! Kerr Lake is one of the best fishing spots in the state. There’s about 49,000 acres of flooded waters and 800 miles of shoreline right on the border of Virginia and North Carolina. It’s filled with fish like largemouth and striped bass, crappie, walleye and catfish. And don’t be confused if you can’t find any information on.. Please visit the official website...

Most lakes and rivers are all but off-limits when the cold seasons come. Waters become uncomfortably frigid and might even freeze over. This means that, with the exception of lucky people who live in the year-round warm climate states, enjoying certain outdoor water sports is limited to a relatively short amount of time in the year. I don’t know about you, but come February, I’m about ready to bust from my water withdrawal. But come a little closer and I’ll tell you a secret…Mt. Storm Lake, a heated lake in the mountains of West Virginia, could very well be the cure for the water sports-deprived states during the cold months. ...
