I was at the beach last weekend fully enjoying the spring sunshine, when I overheard some surfers talking to each other. It went a little something like this:

“Check it, brohah! I was ripping these chocka lines earlier, totally on cloud nine but then I axed it and got hell munched! I was totally caught in the fish net, brah. Epic bummer.”

Um…what?

It was like I had left...

Western Pennsylvania is the perfect example that you don’t have to be right next to the ocean to enjoy water sports. Even Pittsburgh is known to locals as “the city of rivers”! There are 38.3 miles of shoreline thanks to the three rivers that run through the city. Which means there is plenty of room and opportunity to get out there and enjoy the water!

Kayakers enjoy some time on the Allegheny River The Ohio, Allegheny and the Monogahela Rivers run right through Pittsburgh and are usually thought of just as tools for the steel...

Some people have all the luck when it comes to fishing. While the rest of us get stuck reeling in seaweed and toilet seats, these lucky anglers have caught some of the rarest (and strangest) fish ever seen.

A goldfish that you most definitely cannot flush down the toilet

This 300 lb. monster was caught in Thailand and, literally, broke the scale when it was weighed. The overjoyed villagers who caught it nearly lost it after it kept...

A friend, knowing that I’m a huge fan of surfing, sent me a YouTube video link over the weekend that I’m not ashamed to say put a tear in my eye. It’s an extremely inspirational story about a dog named Rip Curl Ricky, a service dog that helps disabled kids in an unusual way—she helps them surf!

Make sure you've got some Kleenex on hand before you watch this...

This “SURF-ice” dog was trained from birth to assist the disabled. But as she and her love for chasing birds grew, she was dropped from the training program. Instead of completely giving up on training a service dog, her owners tried something new....

Cape Hatteras, North Carolina has often been called “a fisherman’s paradise”, and for good reason. It’s an amazing spot to do some fishing this summer! There are plenty of charters around the cape to take you out into the deeper waters, or if you’ve got your own boat, plenty of easy access storage facilities. But really, you don’t even need a boat to catch some of the more than abundant fish population! Fishing off of the piers starts in April and goes seven days a week all the way until December.

One of the many piers to fish off of in Cape Hatteras!...

Earlier this week, Jim Rawlinson, a 68 year-old surfer in Kauai, Hawaii went on a pretty wild ride…but it wasn’t on the beautiful ocean waves. It was on the back of a 14 foot tiger shark.

When he was surfing in Hanalei Bay, he felt a strong nudge from underneath his board, which sent it flying into the air and Rawlinson straight into the water, and onto the back of the board-bumping culprit. The shark pulled his surfboard through the water for a few seconds while the board leash was still wrapped around his ankle. But thankfully, being an experienced surfer, Rawlinson obeyed the first rule of surviving a shark attack: staying calm.

You’ve slaved away all winter at work. It’s time to start thinking about summer, the time for a well-deserved vacation and relaxing. Even the massive waves that hit the northern shores of Hawaii take the summer off. In fact, at the end of the winter season in March, these waters famous for their enormous barrel waves are almost completely flat.

Not a bad sight to wake up to!But there’s hope for an exciting Hawaiian getaway yet! There are still plenty of great spots that are perfect for  surfers who don’t want to get their butts kicked by 20...

It seems some anglers and fishing enthusiasts are less than thrilled about a potential new “federal strategy for marine spatial planning”. I freely admit that I had to Google what exactly that meant.

Recently, there have been talks that the Obama Administration, the Interagency Ocean Policy Task Force and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will create a federal act that limits the zoning of fisherman from certain parts of the coastal waters, Great Lakes, and other bodies of water. Their goals are to “maintain healthy, resilient and sustainable” waters that may not be as well-off as they once were.
