Being environmentally conscious is a great thing to do. Sailing is also a great thing to do. Combining these two great things is just another level of greatness. David de Rothschild, a self-proclaimed “eco-adventurer” has taken this idea and has really run—er, sailed—with it. After four years of designing and construction, he created a completely eco-friendly full-sized catamaran named Plastiki out of 12,000 post-consumer plastic bottles. The trailing turbine is electrically powered with the use of solar panels. The cabin is made from environmentally safe srPET plastic and will be used as a disaster relief shelter when they are done with their journey. They also have an on-board, solar-paneled, hydroponic garden that will grow a small supply of fruits and vegetables so the crew won’t have to eat “rehydrated food” while on their 100 day journey. I thought I would catch him being environmentally unsafe when I thought, “Aha! But what about the toilet?!” But alas, Rothschild really and truly thought...

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that when you hear the word “surfing”, you think of warm weather, palm trees, sand, and the likes. But for now, put your preconceived notions aside and consider the following for a moment: glacier surfing in Alaska. Gives you chills, doesn’t it? Glacier surfing is not for the faint of heart. As huge chunks of glacier melt and fall off, they tumble into the water and create huge waves for daredevils to surf. And with air temperatures as low as 10 degrees Fahrenheit, even in full wetsuits it can get mighty chilly. This great video was captured by Ryan Casey when Garrett McNamara and...

America’s Cup…wait! Don’t go, it’s not what you think! Don’t fret, there are no more legal battles over the 33rd Race. (Thank goodness!) There’s a new storm brewing. This time it’s over bringing the regatta to Newport, Rhode Island in 2013. Along with the glory of winning in Valencia, the BMW Oracle team from San Francisco earned the right to have the next race on home turf. Naturally, they’ve made it apparent that they want to race on the west coast in San Francisco. But the America’s Cup 2013 Planning Committee has commissioned Newport to draw up initial plans to show that they’re a suitable choice for the next race. This isn’t an unfamiliar process for Newport—they hosted America’s Cup for 50 years up until 1983. However, since the winning team has already stated their preference, many are saying that Rhode Island is a long shot. And it seems like the mayor of San Francisco has put his boxing gloves on, after claiming that he and his city will do “whatever it takes” to bring the race to California....

Recently, an article about WaterplayUSA was written by Lois Friedland on About.com! Lois is an About.com Adventure Travel Guide who writes a great blog about (you guessed it!) some of the most exciting adventure trips imaginable. Of course, where there is a body of water there is most certainly an adventure ready to unfold, and so she writes about most of the water sports you can think of, from whitewater rafting in Peru to scuba diving in Cancun. It’s safe to say that Lois Friedland knows a thing or two about adventuring, especially on the open water. ...
